REACREATIVO DE HUELVA - 1 FC CARTAGENA - 0END OF A DREAM

With only 1 match of the season remaining, this defeat inside the Nuevo Stadium, Huelva, broke the hearts of eternally optimistic Cartagena fans, who now must accept that promotion to La Liga is mathematically impossible. For such an important match, the men from one of Spain's major naval ports seemed strangely subdued throughout the 1st half - and their hosts weren't exactly on fire!! Early on, Huelva striker Aitor shot agonisingly over the bar, but it wasn't until 40 mins that the visitors threatened. Through on goal, De Lucas wasted a golden opportunity to open the scoring, when he horribly screwed his shot well wide of the post from only 5 yards out. At the end of normal time, Ruben, under threat of an aerial challenge by Carmona, bravely punched away an in swinging corner. It was Carmona, who last season scored the all important winning goal for Los Albinegros against Alcoyano in the div 2b play offs, before sadly moving to Reacreativo in the close season over a pay dispute.
With the 2nd half less than a minute old, Etxeita inexplicably played a suicidal back pass straight into the path of Reacreativo no 18, Braulio. Although Ruben was alert to the danger, Braulio kept his head before placing a well struck shot under the body of the crestfallen keeper. This seemed to galvanise the visitors into a belated sense of urgency, but not before Aitor almost doubled his sides advantage - his shot edging the wrong side of the post. Twice within 5 minutes, Toche could have scored for Cartagena. His accurate shot was well saved, then a powerful header just missed the target. In the closing minutes, the final Cartagena effort went to Herrero, but unfortunately he suffered the same luck as Toche. Ruben saved well from Carmona when faced with a 1 on 1, as the final seconds of injury time signalled the end of a dream - for now!!

Although Cartagena have nothing left to play for (whatever happens, they will finish the season in 5th place), relegation threatened Albacete need to win to ensure survival.
