UD Cerro Reyes 2 - FC Cartagena 1. By Steve.

LOS ALBINEGROS HORROR SHOW
UD CERRO REYES - 2 FC CARTAGENA - 1
BY STEVE HIBBERD

Cartagena failed to beat 9 man Cerro Reyes, despite dominating for large periods of a game which was there for the taking.
In a division which is proving to be so tight at the top, failing to see off lowly opposition, especially when the odds are heavily stacked against them, is totally unacceptable. Players morale is obviously low, following the recent resignation of former manager Amaral. A new dynamic manager, must now be the utmost priority, if an end of season play off slot is to be secured. For whilst caretaker Pedro Arango is a reluctant incumbent, the team spirit is markedly suffering. Without doubt, Cartagena have a talented bunch of players, more than capable of winning the division, but without a motivator at the helm, they have become less than average. Cerro Reyes currently lie 4th to bottom, in what is proving a difficult debut div 2b season for them.
CARTAGENA TEAM
CABREJO, LEO ORLANDO, LUSARRETA (MOLIST 52), CABREJO, ELIAS (CARMONA 80), MARIANO, SIVORI, MARCO, LAFUENTE (CHITO 76), SABINO
Sun 21 Jan - festival day in Badajoz, home of Cerro Reyes. Jose Pache stadium was set for a theatrical extravaganza late afternoon, following the previous 90 min worth of pure farce (well it is still pantomine season!) courtesy of a comedy entitled, 'A FOOTBALL MATCH'.
The game errupted in the 6th min when the irritating Pablo Paz picked up a 2nd yellow card for his cynical foul of the harmless Mariano 'I'm only a poor little sparrow' Sanchez. Things got worse for 10 man Cerro Reyes, for less than a minute later, referee Santana awarded a penalty against them. Marco sent keeper Manu the wrong way, and the scene was set for a landslide!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Except nobody had told the home side. Only 12 mins were on the clock when the game was again on equal footing. A deep clearance by Lusarreta fell to Verdu some 30 yards from cartagenas goal. Verdus intended cross somehow wrong footed Cabrero, who could only watch in horror as the ball flew into an empty net. Cerro Reyes appeared to commit football suicide after only 34 mins of play. No 9, Aaron, disputed an offside decision against him a bit too vigorously. His foul mouth tirade against the match officials earned him a straight red card, leaving his colleagues to play out the remainder of the match with only 9 men.
Half time: Cerrro Reyes -1 Cartagena - 1
As would be expected from a team enjoying a 2 man advantage, Cartagena laid a constant seige on a delapidated Cerro Reyes defence. Although they huffed, and they puffed, Cartagena failed to trouble a goalkeeper whose team mates defended as if their lives depended on it. Then the unthinkable was thought!! With their 1st attack of the 2nd half, Cerro Reyes took the lead on 82 mins. Without Lusarreta in defence or Elias in midfield (both players had been sacrificed in favour of extra strikers - naivety in the extreme!!) Cerro Reyes were met with little resistance, as they broke from defence. Substitute Joaquin crossed from the right, finding a unmarked Sosa, who had all the time in the world to pick his spot and shoot past a helpless Cabrero. Although Molist, Carmona and Mariano all came close to scoring in the final 5 mins, it was a case of much too little, far too late.
Attendance - 800
FORTHCOMING FIXTURE
After 2 disappointing away trips, a win at the Cartagonova Stadium is essential. Cartagena still boast an excellent home record, having won 7 and drawn the other 2 matches this season. Fifth place Cartagena are also the divisions joint top scorers with 39, alongside leaders Cordoba. Next Sun 28 Jan, ko 5pm, they entertain 12th place Granada. Back in early September, the 2 sides drew 1-1 at Granada, as the newly promoted side started the season brightly.
