FORMER ATLETICO MADRID DEFENDER JOINS CARTAGENA
BY STEVE HIBBERD
At long last, FC Cartagena have made their first signing of the close season. Marcos Martin Ortega (to be known as Marcos Martin) has signed from Atletico Madrid Res side.
Aged 22, he arrives with glowing reports, and hopefully will strengthen a defence which towards the end of last season leaked far too many goals.
Both div 2b group iv play off survivors had good results last Sunday. Champions Sevilla ´B´ must be pleased with their 0-0 draw away to highly fancied Burgos, whilst 4th placed Cordoba thoroughly deserved the 2-0 home victory over group iii side Huesca. The 2nd leg matches will be played next Sunday, 24 June.
The final days fixtures in the Premier and Div 2a saw no real shocks. As expected, Real Madrid were crowned champions, albiet finishing with the same points as 2nd place Barcelona. I find it increadible that although Barcelona had a vastly superior goal difference (+45 as opposed to Real Madrids +26) Real clinched the crown because of their favourable head to head record. Surely the head to head method should come into effect after goal difference has been taken into effect. But this is Spain, and at times the Spanish FA are a law unto themselves, as is demonstrated when the champions of divs 2b and 3 have to compete for the play offs, instead of being automatically promoted.
Sevilla and Valencia take the other 2 Champions league slots, whilst Villareal and Zaragoza qualify for the UEFA cup. Celta, Real Sociadad and Nastic make the dreaded drop into div 2a.
