NEW LOOK CARTAGENA STARTING TO GEL
THADER ROJALES - 1 FC CARTAGENA - 3
BY STEVE HIBBERD
Against an over physical Thader side, Cartagena eventually ran out easy winners in this 2nd pre-season friendly match.
Unfortunately, Thaders officials must have failed to inform their players that the word 'friendly', means just that!! No less that 4 yellow cards were brandished by a no nonsense, but very efficient referee, in the direction of the home sides players, who seemed intent on kicking the visitors off the park. Late on, Cartagenas Curro did pick up a booking, but by then it was very much a case of self preservation.
An extremely dull 1st half, only came to life just before half time, when Cartagenas new defender Ormazabal was judged to have handled just inside the penalty area. Although Thader scored from the spot, the chance of a quick equaliser was spawned, when trialist Koeman headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Los Albinegros entered the 2nd half with all guns blazing. Following on from an early free kick which was turned over the bar for a corner, resultant play culminated in a close range effort by Ruben hitting the post, although the ever alert Molist was at hand to hammer home the rebound. Midway through the half, Molists accurate header gave the keeper no chance, as Cartagena deservedly took the lead for the 1st time. When a delightful through ball found Molist in an onside position, you just knew that the in form striker would go on to complete his hat trick. It's now 5 goals in 2 games for last seasons top scorer, and although they have come against lesser opposition, his manager must be pleased with the manner in which they have been executed. Late on, a Chito free kick and a poor header from Ruben, should really have given the scoreline a more realistic look, in a game which Cartagena showed good discipline, composure and commitment.
COPA DEL REY
In the 1st round of the Copa del Rey (Spanish FA Cup), FC Cartagena have been drawn away to 3rd div Granada Atletico on Weds 29 Aug.
COMINGS AND GOINGS
Taking the squad numbers up to 15, another player has signed on the dotted line. Juvenal Edjogo Owono Montalban has certainly done the rounds. Former clubs include Espanol, Levante, Racing Santander, Castellon, Alaves, Huelva and most recently Tenerife. The 32 year old midfielder has full international caps, gained whilst representing his homeland, Ecuatorial Guinea. Juvenal made his debut in the friendly against Thader, where he made a promising start.
Alas, we must bid fond farewells to 3 crowd favourites. Giant centre back Oscar Rodriguez has reluctantly joined Portuense, whilst midfielders Elias and Marco (instantly recognisable by their snazzy hairbands!) have joined Ponferridina.
