TOUGH TASK AHEAD FOR CARTAGENA
BY STEVE HIBBERD
Incredibly, the final 2 promotion places into div 2a have only just been resolved. Both 1st leg play off final matches involving Alcorcon v Real Union, and Villarreal 'B' v Real Jaen finished goalless. Real Union then made home advantage count, when they lived up to their favourites tag by beating Alcorcon 3-1. No real deal for Jaen though, as Villarreal's 2nd string clung onto a 2-1 shock away victory, making 'Yellow Submarine' the only reserve outfit in div 2a for season 2009/10.
More and more clubs are unhappy with the current Spanish league system, whereas reserve teams play in the same division as other clubs main team. I cannot think of another first rate European country that operates such a totally illogical system, which devalues the Spanish League as a whole.
Make no mistake, next seasons div 2a is awesome, meaning that Los Albinegros will have to play out of their skins to survive relegation, let alone be in with a shout for promotion. Check out next seasons div 2a lineup:
MURCIA - FC Cartagena, Real Murcia. VALENCIA - Elche, Hercules, Levante, Villarreal 'B', Castellon. CATALONIA - Gimnastic Tarragona, Girona, Huesca. VASCO (BASQUE) - Real Sociedad. GALICIA - Celta Vigo. CASTILLA LEON - Salamanca, Real Union. MADRID - Rayo Vallecano, Numancia. ALBACETE - Albacete. ANDALUCIA - Real Betis, Cadiz, Racing Huelva, Cordoba. CANARY ISLANDS - Las Palmas.
