An amazing crowd of over 13,000 witnessed the 1st leg of the div 2b champion of champions match at Cartagonova Stadium. Having won their play off match against Alcoyano, thus securing promotion to div 2a at the first attempt, Cartagenas reward was to meet the other group champion promotee Cadiz, who last week knocked out Real Union in the play offs.
Played in a carnival like atmosphere, where fireworks and balloons were plentiful, this match was treated as anything but a friendly. The first half was played at a blistering pace, fair in as much that the referee was able to keep both cards firmly in his pocket. Although Cadiz scored both their goals early on, it was Cartagena who created by far the better chances, no more so when following Nanos blistering shot which rattled the crossbar, Mena was equally unlucky to see his header also smack the woodwork. On 12 mins, a cross by Caballero was nodded into the net by an unmarked Rubiato. Then 10 mins later, it was Rubiato again who did the damage, this time side footing home from close range.
Funny old game football, for in the 2nd half it was predominantly Cadiz who made chance after chance, thwarted mainly by sub goalie Oscar who pulled off at least 3 world class saves. On 70 mins Cartagena were awarded a penalty when Addison was hauled down inside the box, resulting in a red card for Fragoso. Up stepped Nano to convert, and send the large crowd of predominately die hard Los Albinegros faithful loopy with delight. In addition to the sending off, there were also bookings for Cabrejo, Raul and Falcon, plus 3 from Cadiz.
