Vamos Cartagena, vamos campeón. By Steve.

VAMOS CARTAGENA VAMOS CAMPEON
FC CARTAGENA - 2 RAYO VALLECANO - 0
BY STEVE HIBBERD

"Come on Cartagena, come on champions", rang out loud and clear amongst the vast majority of 8,200 ecstatic fans inside an electric Cartagonova Stadium. The expression on some of their faces read, "pinch me, I'm having a dream", resulting from their heroes 3rd consequetive competetive victory on the bounce. This is no fantasy my amigos, this is 100% reality, as Los Albinegros stage their amazing magical mystery tour - season 2009/2010. Following hot on the heels of opening victories in league and cup, Cartagena kept up that momemtum as they strolled through this first home league game of the season. Madrid based Rayo Vallecano rode into town, boyed on by a good opening 3 points from the game against Albacete. Having now finalized his squad of 22, manager JIM elected to make only 1 change from the opening win at Girona - replacing Tato with hat trick hero Toche. Early exchanges produced little goal scoring opportunities, the 1st arriving as late as the 20th min when a cross cum shot from Victor inched over the crossbar, almost giving Cartagena the lead. Nine mins later, the new boy had done it again. A Victor free kick, from the edge of the pen area, floated perfectly to the far post, where it was met by the golden head of Toche, who firmly planted it goalbound for his 4th goal in 2 games (all headers - eat yer heart out Crouchie!!). The only other incident of note, in an otherwise uninspiring 1st half, arrived when Rayos Quero was dead unlucky to see his powerful drive rattle the crossbar.

High drama inside the 2nd min of the new half.. Ex Real Murcia hardman Movilla, found no sympathy from a baying Cartagena crowd, when he received his 2nd yellow card for a crude challenge on the theatrical De Lucas (the guy is a cult hero already). With Cygan, Mariano, Clavero and Pablo Ruiz magnificent in defence, Rayo were given few chance to score an equalizer - in fact it was the home side who almost doubled their advantage when De Lucas put his shot into the side netting. Substitute Sielva was convinced he had done just that on 66 mins, but his well worked effort was rightly disallowed for offside by the excellent arbitro Gil Manzano. A lot of bad press has been written about match officials (and I'm no saint!), but this man was outstanding in everything that is desired from the man in black (or whatever colour he was wearing!!). Two loud shouts for hand ball inside the Rayo pen area, were firmly dismissed, as the Los Albinegros bandwagon kept on rolling. When the 4th official indicated a further 2 mins of time to be added on, it looked like the game would take its course - how wrong could one be. Searching for an equailizer had left Rayo vulnerable at the back, which sub Tato was exploiting with his direct play. One such run was abruptly halted by an x rated challenge by Angel, earning him a straight red card. Down to 9 men, and seemingly having lost the plot, Rayo were ripe for plunder - cue Tato. Having got control of a lose ball inside the box, he coolly struck the ball past keeper Cobeno for goal no 2, giving the scoreline a truer reflection of how the game had gone.
