Fin al sueño de la copa. By Steve.

CUP DREAMS SHATTERED
UD SALAMANCA - 2 FC CARTAGENA - 0
BY STEVE HIBBERD

Fielding a team comprising of predominately squad players, manager JIM mirrored what most other football chiefs do in the Copa del Rey - he treated it with contempt. But, with very little revenue to be gained from it, who can blame him, when consolidating a place in div 2a is clearly his priority. Having said this, even with a full strength side, a trip to fellow div 2a side Salamanca was always going to be tough.
For the visit to Helmantic Stadium, Los Albinegros were forced to play in their all yellow 2nd strip. Winners of this 3rd round tie would earn the rights to possibly play a La Liga side, who enter the cup at the 4th round stage.
The game was dominated by the home side, and had it not been for the brilliance of Cartagenas young keeper Castilla, then the floodgates would surely have opened. Surprisingly, the games first goal did not arrive until the 53rd min, when Salamancas front man Toti converted an inch perfect cross. Salamanca made the game safe on 70 mins, when following an offence in the penalty area, Salva stepped up to convert the spot kick.
