CARTAGENA END 2009 IN STYLELEVANTE UE - 1 FC CARTAGENA - 2

Inside the impressive Cuitat de Valencia Stadium, Los Albinegros recorded a highly satisfactory victory against mid table Levante.
The year 2009 will go down as possibly the best ever in the history of FC Cartagena (formerly EFESE). For not only did they achieve promotion to div 2a for the first time in over 20 years, but the manner in which they have started life in Spain's feeder division to La Liga, has been nothing short of magnificent. This win puts them in 3rd place, behind Real Sociadad and Hercules, with impressive statistics of 29 points from 17 games.
Although the 1st half was low on goalscoring opportunities, those that were on view were for Cartagena. Midway through, Exposito struck an edge of the box free kick just past the post, but it wasn't until the final 5 min's that Cartagena really came into their own. Twice within the space of 2 min's, Lafuente first hit the crossbar, then the pint size live wire saw another attempt well saved. With 45 min's on the clock, top scorer Toche powered home an audacious 35 yard free kick, almost breaking the back of the net, giving his side a deserved half time lead.
The half time team talk, certainly galvanised Levante into play showing far more urgency, illustrated on 51 then 56 min's, when Cartagenas keeper Ruben produced 2 top drawer saves to deny an equaliser. But, as so often happens, if you don't take your chances you get punished. On the hour mark, the visitors extended their lead, this time it was Exposito who blasted home another long range free kick (this time from only 30 yards!!). From then onwards it was one way traffic. Try as they may, Levante could not improve on a chipped goal by Suarez on 80 min's, as shot after shot missed the target, the last on 4 min's of stoppage time.
