CD NUMANCIA - 2 FC CARTAGENA - 1
BY STEVE HIBBERD
Missing 2 key players, keeper Ruben and play-maker Lafuente, through swine flu, certainly disrupted Cartagena manager JIMs plans for this all important div 2a fixture at Los Pajaritos Stadium, Numancia. Over 200 hardy Los Albinegros fans made the long journey into mountainous country, just north of Madrid, where temperatures barely rose above freezing. Starting the day as league leaders, Cartagena were clearly suffering from the bitterly cold conditions, looking disorganised in all departments, and it was no surprise when they conceded an early goal. Valez latched on to a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area, striking his shot with such accurate venom, that stand in keeper Castilla never stood a chance to prevent the home side taking the lead after 24 mins. Ten mins later, it was Longas whose powerful header from an in-swinging corner, agonisingly just missed the target, as Cartagena briefly came back into the game. But their domination was short lived, for on 38 mins, a teasing 30 yard free kick was forcefully met by the head of Valez, resulting in Castilla once again picking the ball from the back of the net for goal number 2.
Numancia continued to govern the game into the 2nd half, requiring Castilla to be at his very best, the pick being a breathtaking save from the dangerous Valez. Substitute Tato was unlucky not to score on 72 mins, his header inched just over the bar, as Cartagena launched a rare attack. Shortly afterwards, Castilla once again earned his keep with another superb save, but it was the visitors who had the final say. Receiving the ball just inside the penalty area, Toche struck an inch perfect shot just inside the Numancia keepers near post on 89 mins, giving Cartagena a consolation goal which their determination just about deserved, making him top goalscorer.
FC Cartagena lineup
Castilla, Clavero, Pablo, Cygan (Herrero), Exposito, Tonino (Tato), Longas, Victor, Toche, Mariano, De Lucas (Quintero)
Forthcoming Fixture
With joint leaders Real Sociadad winning, Cartagena have slipped to 3rd, and next week face a tough test against a strong UD Salamanca side. Make a note in your diary for Sunday 13 December, ko 1200, at Cartagonova Stadium, for this sure to be entertaining div 2a match.
