WINNING STREAK CONTINUE
UD PUERTOLLANO - 0 FC CARTAGENA - 2
BY STEVE HIBBERD
Team manager Alcoy couldn't hide his jubilation, as his reshaped Cartagena side made it 3 wins on the bounce, moving up to 5th in div 2b as a result.
It was back in March, under the guidance of the Walrus, that Los Albinegros last achieved a hat trick of victories. Now, Ceuta, Linares and Puertollano have become the latest teams to feature in the current statistic. Suspensions to Mariano and Charcos have robbed Alcoy of 2 key players, but even though their replacements had played very little in a Cartagena shirt (Maureta making his long awaited debut), they rose to the occasion admirably.
FC CARTAGENA LINE UP
ALEJANDRO, ORMAZABAL, MAURETA, JUVENAL, ORLANDO, CURRO (MARCOS), CABREJO (ALCANTARA), CARMONA, MOLIST, LAFUENTE, TOLEDO (SIVORI)
Puertollano started this match by far the brighter of the 2 sides, creating 3 excellent goalscoring opportunities within the first 15 mins. The remainer of the half saw Cartagena creep back into the reckoning, although Puetollano looked a strong side to break down.
In the 49th and 52nd mins, Cartagenas young keeper Alejandro pulled off magnificent saves from Puertollanos twin strikers. It took a truely outstanding strike from midfielder Juvenal to break the deadlock on 58 mins. The Guinea international unleashed a majestic free kick from fully 40 yards, which bounced in front of a bemused keeper before nesting into the back of the net. Only 3 more mins had elapsed when Cartagena doubled their lead. This time it arrived courtesy of a Lafuente inswinging corner, placed perfectly for Toledo to head home his 1st league goal of the season. The young Frenchman has been threatening to score for some weeks now, following a disappointing start to the season. So, Cartagenas first ever match against newly promoted Puertollano, at their Francisco Sanchez Menor Stadium, resulted with 3 more hard earned points in the bag.
Attendance - 4,000
FORTHCOMING FIXTURE
Top of the table fixtures appear to be coming thick and fast for Cartagena. Next up at Cartagonova Stadium, in another div 2b clash, is the arrival of new leaders, Ecija. Only 3 points ahead of Cartagena, Ecija have a mixed record of away results this season, having won 2, drawn 1 and lost 3 matches. Last season, Cartagena narrowly won the corresponding match 1-0, and another close encounter is expected this time around. A goodly crowd is expected for this match on Sun 18 Nov, ko 5pm, when hopefully the crowd will once again get behind their team.
