FC CARTAGENA - 3 CD LINARES - 1
BY STEVE HIBBERD
The best crowd of the season at Cartagonova Stadium were treated to an exhibition of skilful football, as Cartagena comprehensively beat top of the table Linares.
Linares are firm favourites for a play off slot, requiring Cartagena to be at their very best if they wished to gain their scalp. Manager Alcoy elected to field an unchanged side from last weeks win at Ceuta, even though keeper Caballero was available after suspension.
FC CARTAGENA LINE UP
ALEJANDRO, ORMAZABAL, LUSARRETA, CHARCOS (ORLANDO), CURRO, MARIANO, CABREJO, CARMONA, MOLIST, LAFUENTE, TOLEDO (SIVORI)
A festival atmosphere greeted the players who entered the field to an array of ticker tape and the first sight of the lateral stands new giant maroon flag, which proudly displayed the clubs crest in the middle. It didn't take long for Cartagena to storm into the lead. On 8 mins, Cabrejo unleashed a beauty from long range, giving Linares keeper no chance, sending his side into an early lead with his first goal of the season. Having taken an earlier whack, Charcos left the field prematurely, but not before he had told the ref his fortune, receiving a yellow card for his troubles. Unfortunately the lead was short lived, a further 8 mins to be exact. It arrived via a well taken free kick, which was headed home by Catanaha, who was later to regret teasing the home faithful with his over the top celebrations. Move on a further 10 mins, and the lead had been regained. Mariano headed into goal from a free kick in almost identical circumstances from the Linares effort. Ormazabal almost made it 3 before half time, but his great headed effort inched past the post.
The 2nd half was played at a fast and furious pace. Even the normally laid back Molist was getting stuck in, so much so that he got himself booked for a late challenge. Mariano quickly followed him into the refs little black book, and he will now join Charcos on the list of suspensions for next week match. Once again, Toledo was working hard, but it was Molist who came closest to extending the lead, when his speculative shot from the half way line went just wide. The arrival of Sivori almost paid immediate dividends, as his sweet free kick was headed just over by Carmona. When Linares scorer Catanha was replaced in the 82nd min, it must have been such a relief for him to escape the constant abuse given to him by Cartagenas unforgiving fans, who were enjoying every minute of this pulsating match. Four minutes into stoppage time, saw Lafuente embark on an audacious run from his own half, which he coolly converted, to cap off an excellent performance from Los Albinegros.
Attendance: 3,500
FORTHCOMING FIXTURE
Next Sunday, 11 Nov ko 5pm, Cartagena make the long journey to 12th place Puertollano. Cartagena themselves have moved up to 6th, only 3 points behind joint leaders Ecija and Linares.
Many thanks to Sky Blue Fred for supplying me with a set of notes, enabling me to compile this report, as I was still wallowing in Pompeys amazing victory at St James Park, the first for 58 years!
