DISASTER IN MERIDA
By Sky Blue Fred
After the not so unexpected sacking of Cartagena manager, Fran Alcoy, this week it was with bated breath that the Cartagena faithfull awaited the out come of this encounter, alas there were to be no miracles on show as they crashed to a 3 0 drubbing at Merida. This being the 6th defeat of the season so far and leaving them languishing down in 9th place in the league. Not good for a club that aspires to reach the play offs and eventual promotion to Division 2a.
New manager Pichi Lucas was brought in in to turn around the topsy turvy season that "Los Albinegros" are currently undergoing. Having won promotion last season with Ponferrdina his pedigree seems to be good, he has promised "pretty, attacking football" but it would appear that he has a monumental task on his hands.
With team captain Sivori still sidelined through injury the team was:- Alejandro, Ormazabal, Cabrejo, Lusarreta, Orlando, Mariano Sanchez, Curro, Carmona, Lafuente, Toledo & Molist.
Merida set their stall out right from the off & reaped the benefit of an unusual error by young goalkeeper Alejandro allowing Carlos Ruben to put the home side ahead after only 13 minutes.Cartagena's chances on goal were few & far between & their defence were struggling to keep the deadly trio of Carlos Ruben, Luciano & Cartagena old boy Sabino in check. It is with great hope that when the transfer window opens in January there will be a strong central defender & a goalscorer on the shopping list because these are the two areas that have let the team down all season.
With only 10 minutes on the clock in the second half Lusarreta collected his second yellow card of the game & so went for the early bath. This weakened an already ineffectual defence & 4 minutes later Cuevas put Merida 2 0 up. Pichi Lucas tried to change the game around some what by introducing Juvenal & Chito onto the field of play in place of Curro & Toledo. After Merida's 6 0 thrashing down at Melilla last week-end Cartagena probably thought this game was going to be simple but it was not to be & in the 74th minute Luciano buried goal number 3.
So it is off to the training ground this week for some seriously hard work & confidence building in preparation for the home encounter with C.D.Alcala.
Forthcoming fixtures at Cartaganova Stadium.
Saturday 22nd December kick off 1800hrs. Cartagena v C.D. Alcala
Wednesday 26th December kick off 1830hrs Murcia Select XI v Equatorial Guinea (Entrance for this friendly is on ly 3 & 5 euros)
And on a final note, a big thank you & good luck to Ray Ransom & his consortium for bailing Coventry City out of the mire.
