PLAY OFF DREAMS STILL ALIVE
AGUILAS CF - 1 FC CARTAGENA - 3
BY STEVE HIBBERD
This local derby lived up to the hyped up play off billing - it was a cracker!
Both sides needed a win, although Aguilas now have the luxury of having a 2 points cushion over their Murcian rivals. With only 3 games left to play, Cartagena find themselves still 5 points behind 4th place Merida, who ironically they meet in the next match. Manager Pichi Lucas made 4 changes from last weeks draw with Baza. In came Charcos, Carmona and Toledo, plus the return from injury of Cabrejo, which was a sight for sore eyes (the mans enthusiasm is infectious!).
FC CARTAGENA LINE UP
ALEJANDRO, ORMAZABAL, LUSARRETA (ORLANDO), CHARCOS, CABREJO, MARIANO, CARMONA, SIVORI (KOEMAN), TOLEDO, ROCHA (BENITEZ), CURRO
The game started off at a frantic pace, and it was no surprise when Aguilas opened the scoring on 21 minutes. In for Rocha, levelled the scores only 4 minutes later, before Carmona stole the show. His first was courtesy of an assist by Rocha on 41 minutes, then on the stroke of half time, it was Sivori who provided a pass for Carmona to thump the ball home. Seemingly having learned their lesson (at long last!), Cartagena packed the defence and maintain the lead, allowing the home side few chances. Indeed, so frustrated were Aguilas, in the final minute they were reduced to 10 men when Hernandez was given a straight red card for his x rated 2 footed lunge on substitute Orlando. Charcos and Curro picked up yellow cards, as did Fernandez of Aguilas.
Attendance - 1,300
FORTHCOMING FIXTURE
It´s getting to the nitty gritty bit of the season - make or break time. On Sunday 4 May ko 6pm, Cartagena host 4th place Merida at Cartagonova Stadium. As Merida are currently 5 points ahead of their hosts, only a win will prolong Cartagenas play off ambitions. WOMEN AND CHILDREN WILL GAIN ADMITTANCE FREE OF CHARGE FOR THIS MATCH.
