Duro revés ante el Elche. By Steve.

ELCHE THAT HURT!!
FC CARTAGENA - 0 ELCHE CF - 2
BY STEVE HIBBERD

Los Albinegros pushed the self destruct button on more than one occasion in this div 2a local(ish) derby, in which they ended the game with only 9 men. Luckily, the weekend results went their way, meaning that they still lie joint 3rd (equal on 48 points with Real Betis) in the table.
The first clear cut chance of the match fell to De Lucas, when following a hash by the Elche keeper, De Lucas wasted the opportunity by shooting wide of an unguarded goal. Elche took the lead on 11 mins, following a delightful through ball to Molina, who on the half volley scored an absolute peach of a goal. On 17 mins, Elche had genuine penalty appeals turned down, following a mistimed tackle by Txiki. They could have increased their lead 20 mins later, but a downward header bounced just over the bar. It was Toche who should have levelled the score, but a superb close range shot on the volley slammed against the crossbar, before bouncing to safety.

Early in the 2nd half, referee Lopez was guilty of a howler, when he pulled back play following an infringement on De Lucas. The ex Chelsea man, broke free of his marker, then crossed for Toche to slam the ball into the net, only to discover that a free kick had been awarded for the initial foul. This was to prove to be De Lucas last involvement in the game, for a stamp, followed by a push on an opponent (who theatrically went down holding his face!!) was punished by a red card. Only 2 mins later, it got worse for Cartagena. Not only did Etxeita concede a penalty for shirt pulling, but as the last man in the defence, he too was given his marching orders. Man of the match keeper Ruben, then pulled off a magnificent save, diving low to palm away a well struck penalty. Elche took the game by the scruff of the neck, and should have scored twice in as many mins, but a bad miss, followed by the brilliance of Ruben denied them. On 82 mins, Cartagena should have had a penalty of their own, but an off the ball push on Mariano went unpunished. Elche made the game safe deep into stoppage time, when following Cartagena's all out push for an equaliser, Pedera scored a simple tap in, although he did look suspiciously offside.
